Reference materials are used as criteria and benchmarks for measurement procedures and are indispensable for testing or monitoring. The work of conformity assessment in this area takes place during the production process for the reference materials. Accreditation in this area proves that the producers comply with the requirements of the DIN EN ISO 17034 standard.

What are reference materials?

In many areas of application, enterprises that must guarantee correct and reliable measurement results cannot forgo the use of reference materials. Reference materials are items or substances that are stable in terms of specific properties and are therefore ideally suited for measurements or tests. They are found in the areas of both material testing and physico-chemical foodstuff and environmental analysis.

Reference materials are an important tool for avoiding incorrect measured values – and the incorrect interpretations and decisions that often follow them – and for increasing confidence in analysis and testing. For this reason, ISO/IEC 17025, the relevant standard for accredited testing and calibration laboratories, stipulates that only certified reference materials should be used for quality assurance, as these materials ensure the traceability of measurement results to defined reference values and units.

Accreditation of reference material producers DIN EN ISO 17034

DIN EN ISO 17034 is the basic standard for reference material producers. It defines the requirements that must be met for the competent production of high-quality and certified reference materials. The standard was compiled to promote confidence and trust in reference material producers and in the development and implementation of their quality management systems.
Because the demand for new, high-quality reference materials is steadily growing, more and more suppliers are demonstrating their scientific and technical competence through accreditation on the basis of the international DIN EN ISO 17034 standard. This is a consequence of both the improved precision of measuring systems and the requirement for more accurate and reliable data in scientific and technological disciplines.
