DAkkS changes category designations to present flexible scopes of application
With the adjustment of its body of rules, Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle (DAkkS) is introducing new categories for the presentation of flexible scopes on its certificate annexes, thereby changing its previous practice. Categories III, I and II previously used for the accreditation of testing laboratories will be replaced by categories A, B and C in future. The new category designations make it clearer than was previously the case that the categories build on each other and are used to avoid misinterpretation.
The introduction of the new category designations not only affects the area of testing laboratories in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, it is also part of a harmonised system that establishes the possibility of introducing flexibility of scopes in the other accreditation standards. The new system also provides for future adjustments regarding the presentation of flexible scopes to allow DAkkS to respond to current developments and needs of the market and accredited conformity assessment bodies.
Introduction dates and changeover period
For the area of testing laboratories, the introduction of the new categories for flexible scopes will start on 12 August 2024.
For applications for initial accreditation in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 and applications for extension that include flexibility for the first time, only categories A, B and C will apply from the date of introduction.
For existing accreditations of testing laboratories with a flexible scope, the changeover in the DAkkS certificate annexes from categories III, I and II to the equivalent categories A, B and C will take place in stages at the earliest possible date. This will be done for example when the existing flexible scopes are processed in the context of surveillance assessments or applications for a change of accreditation.
During the changeover period, the existing and newly introduced categories will therefore be in place side by side and on an equal footing to begin with. Both category designations will remain valid for the flexible scope of an accreditation.
What is the purpose of flexibility of the scope?
Flexibility of the scope of an accreditation allows accredited laboratories to include new or modified test methods in their scope of accreditation within defined limits and without having to first undergo a new assessment by the accreditation body each time for amendments or extensions of scope. Flexibility is possible only in areas where the necessary competence among personnel and the requisite premises and facilities are available.
The flexible scope is shown in the accreditation information in the certificate annex. This flexibility is already used by the majority of accredited laboratories and applications for it can be made to DAkkS provided there are no sectoral requirements to the contrary.
New category designations already defined in the body of rules
DAkkS first provided information about the new category designations in February 2023 as part of the publication of rule R-17025-PL for the accreditation of testing laboratories in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018. The presentation of the rules included an announcement that the changeover from the previous designations (III, I, II) to the new categories (A, B, C) will take place at a later date and in stages.
