Formaldehyde regulation by the EPA

In the course of the EPA’s conformity assessment scheme

In January, German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) was recognised by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an accreditation body in the area of American formaldehyde regulation. This was done in the course of the EPA’s conformity assessment scheme, and means that from this point on, DAkkS can accredit approved certification bodies in the area of formaldehyde emission measurement. This recognition of DAkkS is valid for a period of three years, after which it must be renewed.

Change in the organisational structure

Change in the organisational structure of the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS): as of 1 January 1 2018, two of the six current divisions at DAkkS will be merged into one. The new department of “Metrology | Construction | Transport | Renewable Energy”, will incorporate all technical fields formerly found in divisions 1 and 5 into a new structure.

Accreditation of proficiency test providers

Evaluated last week in Berlin by the European co-operation for Accreditation ( EA), German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) achieved a good interim result. The subject matter of the evaluation process was the accreditation of proficiency test providers in accordance with the international standard DIN EN ISO/IEC 17043.

Eight participating national accreditation bodies

In cooperation with the German accreditation body (DAkkS), the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) conducted a study, which compares the functioning of accreditation bodies in Europe. The eight participating national accreditation bodies discussed during a workshop on the 16th / 17th October 2017 in Berlin the results of the first comparison round. The study aims to identify and promote "best practices" and to improve the dialogue among each other.

Dynamic development in national and international markets

Due to the dynamic development in national and international markets, there has been a remarkable demand in the past few years for specific management systems based on ISO / IEC 17021-1: 2015. With its ISO 37001: 2016 (management system for the prevention of corruption) and ISO 55001: 2014 (management system for the asset industry), DAkkS has evaluated two certifiable standards in this area and included both of them into its accreditation portfolio.

Kick-off meeting in Baku

A kick-off meeting held in Baku in September saw the official launch of a Twinning project between the European Union and the Azerbaijani Accreditation Centre (AZAC). Over the next two years and under the leadership of the German accreditation body Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle (DAkkS), AZAC will be modernised and reoriented on the basis of international standards and in accordance with the EU regulatory framework.

At the end of September, Dr. Stephan Finke, Managing Director of the German accreditation body DAkkS, welcomed Anil Jauhri, CEO of the Indian accreditation body NABCB (National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies), to talks in Berlin. The focus of the talks was on future cooperation in the area of accreditation.

Succeeding Norbert Barz

With effect from 1 September 2016, Dr. Stephan Finke is new Managing Director of the German accreditation body Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle (DAkkS). He succeeds Norbert Barz, who in the autumn will be handing over the role to his successor and leaving the company on grounds of age at the end of 2016 after seven years in the position. Holding a doctorate in industrial engineering, Finke most recently served as Business Development Manager at ABB Switzerland.

metrological traceability policy

Requirement of the European Cooperation for Accreditation

The so-called „metrological traceability” is one of the pillars of conformity assessment. The German national accreditation body (DAkkS) has adjusted its requirements regarding the metrological traceability policy in order to meet the requirement of the European Cooperation for Accreditation (EA). As of August 2016 the acceptance of verification reports issued by German verification authorities (“Eichbehörden”) as evidence of metrological traceability will only be possible in individual cases.

Fee schedule

Taking into account the increased effort and complexity of accreditation

Since 1 January 2016 DAkkS applies a new fee schedule for the accreditation of conformity assessment bodies abroad falling outside the scope of EU Regulation (EC) No. 765/2008.
