DAkkS supports international AI standardisation with development of the new ISO/IEC 42007 standard
Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle (DAkkS) is actively involved in the work of international standardisation bodies to develop ISO/IEC 42007, an important standard for conformity assessment of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. DAkkS is playing a central role in this process, contributing its expertise to develop a practical and forward-looking guidance document for AI conformity assessment.
Development of ISO/IEC 42007 – a milestone for AI standardisation
The standard is being developed within the framework of the international committee ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 42, the joint AI committee of ISO and IEC, in close cooperation with experts from the ISO CASCO committee. Entitled “High-level framework and guidance for the development of conformity assessment schemes for AI systems”, the standard is a supplementary document to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17067.
The goal is to make practical guidance available to providers of AI conformity assessment and certification schemes. The new standard is expected to establish an international framework that enables the integration of specific requirements of AI technology into conformity assessment schemes.
“Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role and has enormous implications for society and the economy. To ensure trust and security, the conformity assessment of AI systems must therefore be standardised worldwide,” explains Dr. Ilona Pawlowska-Kurzweg, Head of Scheme Evaluation | Product Development at DAkkS and expert for the DIN EN ISO/IEC 17067 standard on the ISO CASCO committee.
International cooperation for a standard fit for the future
ISO/IEC 42007 is currently being raised to Committee Draft status, which allows for broad international discussion and commentary. This step is key to incorporating the broadest possible body of knowledge in order to establish a consensus-based, globally recognised set of standards.
“DAkkS is contributing its comprehensive expertise in accreditation and conformity assessment in an effort to ensure that ISO/IEC 42007 is in line with practical requirements and can be compared internationally,” says Susanne Kuch, consultant for digitisation policy in quality infrastructure at DAkkS and project manager for the development of ISO/IEC 42007.
The standardisation project is expected to be completed and published in late 2027.
DAkkS as a driver of standardisation work
With the commitment of its experts to standardisation projects such as ISO/IEC 42007, DAkkS is ensuring that conformity assessment systems reflect the latest technological developments and make allowance for the needs of global market stakeholders.
DAkkS was also previously involved in drawing up the published standard ISO/IEC 42006 (Information technology – Artificial intelligence – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of artificial intelligence management systems).
