Material Testing and Materials Technology (non-destructive testing) Technical unit 2.5 at a glance

Focus of the technical unit

In accordance with its technical competence, this technical unit handles accreditation cases for testing laboratories (DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025), inspection bodies (DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020), personnel certification bodies (DIN EN ISO/IEC 17024), providers of proficiency testing (DIN EN ISO/IEC 17043).

The areas of activity of accreditations in the technical unit include:

  • Non-destructive testing and inspections in the areas of:
Acoustic emission testing (AT), eddy current testing (ET), leak testing (LT), magnetic testing (MT), penetrant testing (PT), radiographic testing (RT-F, RT-D, RT-S, RT-CT), thermographic testing (TT), ultrasonic testing including wall thickness measurement (conventional UT, phased array, TOFD), visual testing (VT), high-pressure gas pipelines (GasHDrLtgV), X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), optical emission spectrometry (OES), dynamic hardness testing, and tests for checking NDT equipment (MT, UT, ET).
  • Certification of testing personnel in non-destructive testing in the field of DIN EN ISO 9712 and the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED, EU 2014/68/EU), experts in the field of the High Pressure Gas Pipeline Ordinance (GasHDrLtgV), and personnel in the field of joining, cutting, and coating technology in the non-regulated and regulated areas according to the Pressure Equipment Directive.

  • Proficiency testing in the area of non-destructive testing

Benefits of accreditation

Conformity assessment activities in the field of non-destructive testing require a high degree of reliability and responsibility in order to avert hazards and minimise risks. Non-destructive testing ensures the safe operation of products, plants and systems in all areas of society. Monitoring the certification of persons in the field of non-destructive testing, the High Pressure Gas Pipeline Ordinance, the Pressure Equipment Directive and joining, cutting and coating technology within the framework of accreditation ensures a consistently high standard of competence among personnel employed in these critical areas. The competence monitored by accreditation serves, in the interest of the state, to protect society and the environment, particularly in the area of critical infrastructure, and is therefore of public interest.
