Focus of the technical unit
This technical unit processes accreditations in the area of automobiles, homologation and monitoring of vehicles for testing laboratories in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 and inspection bodies in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020.
Periodic vehicle monitoring
In the area of periodic vehicle monitoring, the unit manages conformity assessment bodies that ensure the roadworthiness of vehicles in accordance with Section 29 StVZO (Road Traffic Licensing Regulations). Accreditations as an inspection body in this area are granted in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020.

Another area of the technical unit’s activities concerns the homologation or testing of vehicles and their parts. Accreditations in this area include in particular technical services (conformity assessment bodies) that carry out tests as part of type approval of systems, components and separate technical units of vehicles in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2018/858. This includes for example the areas of engine and pollutant emissions, passive safety or the testing and inspection of wheels and tyres. Accreditations are granted here as an inspection body in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020 or as a testing laboratory in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, as well as a certification body for management systems in accordance with ISO/IEC 17021, with regard to initial evaluation and surveillance of quality management systems of vehicle manufacturers. On the basis of the German accreditation, the bodies can be designated as a technical service by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) and seek international recognition to carry out tests as a basis for the approval of vehicles in third countries.

Other areas include the accreditation of certification bodies required for example in the area of personnel certification of motor vehicle experts. In addition, the technical unit is also responsible for procedures such as “technical cleanliness”, “visibility”, “noise” for vehicles and their components.
