Technical cooperation

Twinning project launched in Georgia

DAkkS is responsible for the project leadership and project management
Press Release,

On 20 December 2019 starts the Twinning project to strengthen the accreditation system with the focus on EU technical regulations in Georgia. Within the German-Italian consortium the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) is responsible for the project leadership and project management of the two-year project.

In July 2019, together with the Italian accreditation body ACCREDIA, DAkkS had successfully applied for an EU-funded twinning project to strengthen the accreditation system with a focus on European technical regulation in Georgia and was awarded the project.

The project starts today in Tbilisi with the arrival of the long-term advisor ("Resident Twinning Advisor") seconded by ACCREDIA and following the notification of the Twinning contract by the responsible EU authority on 17.12.2019.

DAkkS leads and manages the project

DAkkS is the leading member of the German-Italian consortium and provides for the first time both the project leadership and the project management. In the implementation of the project with a duration of two years, DAkkS and ACCREDIA are supported by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and Unioncamere, the Italian Union of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Handcrafts and Agriculture.

Enhanced cooperation between Georgia and the EU

In addition to the approximation of the regulations for industrial products, the project supports the capacity building of the Georgian national accreditation body GAC in the technical areas in which it is not yet a signatory to the mutual recognition agreement of the European co-operation for accreditation.

The project promotes the implementation of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) and serves to improve Georgia's economic cooperation with the EU. The Twinning Project in Georgia is now the fifth project of this kind involving DAkkS.

Background: What are Twinning Projects?

The aim of a twinning project is to support countries with EU accession prospects and countries in the European neighbourhood in adopting European law and approximating to EU regulations and in building up the necessary administrative capacities. Within the framework of the projects, experts from the administrations of the EU Member States pass on their knowledge and experience with the implementation of EU legislation to colleagues in the respective partner country.
