Structure of the department

The “Automotive Engineering and Road Traffic” department is divided into three subject fields: “Periodic vehicle monitoring”, “Testing of vehicles and their parts” and “Toll collection and systems”.

Accreditations and conformity assessment bodies

The “Periodic vehicle monitoring” subject field deals with bodies (surveillance organisations) tasked with ensuring the roadworthiness of vehicles, for example as part of the general inspection. Accreditations as an inspection body in this area are granted in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020.

The subject field “Testing of vehicles and their parts” focuses in particular on bodies which carry out tests within the framework of type approval of systems, components and separate technical units of vehicles in accordance with Framework Directive 2007/46/EC or in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2018/858. This includes the areas of engine and pollutant emissions, passive safety and the testing and inspection of wheels and tyres. Accreditations in this area are granted as an inspection body in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020 or as a testing laboratory in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025. On the basis of accreditation, these bodies can be designated as technical services by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

The subject field “Toll collection and systems” deals with bodies working in the area of operation of electronic toll systems in accordance with the German Toll Systems Act (MautSysG). Accreditations in this area are granted as a testing laboratory in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, as an inspection body in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020 or as a certification body in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17065. On the basis of accreditation, the bodies can be notified by the Federal Office for Goods Transport (BAG).
